OTTAWA - Obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled on Thursday.
The high court declined to hear an appeal by Canadian airlines of a decision by the Canadian Transportation Agency that people who are "functionally disabled by obesity" deserve to have two seats for one fare.
The airlines had lost an appeal at the Federal Court of Appeal in May and had sought to launch a fresh appeal at the Supreme Court. The court's decision not to hear a new appeal means the one-person-one-fare policy stands.
The appeal had been launched by Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz and WestJet.

These 'rights' things have gone too far. I not only think that an obese person has right to get two seats, I think they should be charged more than a skinny/fit person (unless the obesity is genuinely of genetic nature).
In another article, a man just got lots of money from Jetblue and TSA for being discriminated against for his clean & neat tshirt having arabic script (and english) on it yet they let this guy fly with his shirt?
If he can get 2 seats for the price of one, I want 2 meals because 1 is not filling enough. I want 2 drinks for the price of 1 because I am still thirsty.
I have no compassion for this guy. Maybe I am wrong but I just can not feel that obesity is a disablility.
This borders on being absolutely beyond the relm of common sense. There should be some type of considerations being made for his weight but I feel that if he gets 2 seats for the price of one ticket, I should get my seat for 1/2 price. The Canadian courts obviously disagree with me. Its Crazy
I favor charging by seat and weight; there is no need to get into the argument of how many people. If there is one seat occupied and the total weight (including any luggage) is under the standard range (to be established by the airline), they could provide a discount. Alternatively, if the total weight is over the standard, they could add a charge.
However airlines choose to establish the pricing structure, it should be up to THEM to make the decision, NOT up to the government!
Truth to tell I don't really care about the airfare stuff. What bothers me is this guys tee shirt. I find it incredibly offensive. People die from Anorexia it is NOT a joke.
Either we charge by person or by weight - I'm skinny so I favor weight! Weight should include baggage too!, All i need is a toothbrush, so I win again! Size of plane should count too! Smaller = cheaper, and people will lose weight just to travel cheaper! Win - Win!

I do not agree Obese people have the right to two seats, if I come with my infant who pays an airfare! I have to have to hold the infant for 12 hours on my laps on a long distant flight.
so where you draw the line?
