SYDNEY, Australia – A woman has drowned after being swept off rocks at a popular tourist attraction at La Perouse.
The woman, believed to be an Asian student aged 25, fell off the rocks at Bare Island while having her photo taken at 3pm.
Police, ambulance paramedics and lifesavers performed a search and found her body around 3.35pm.
Tourists continued to navigate the rocks around the island oblivious to the tragedy that occurred only hours earlier.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Local rock fisherman Michael Nikolaidis and his friends moved spots because of the unpredictable waves.
He said they saw tourists too close to the waterโs edge too often.
โAll the time. They really push their luck because they go too close to the water. They donโt look at the big waves coming regularly. It looks OK the next thing your gone,โ he said.
โYou donโt wish that to happen to anyone. We come with metal plates on our shoes they come in thongs on the moss, itโs slimy.
โThere is a sign but I think they should put it in different languages, particularly Chinese.โ
