MUMBAI – Mr. Peter Kerkar, Global CEO, Cox and Kings India, Ltd. has won the World Travel Market Global Award for his contribution to the travel industry at a glittering ceremony held in London on Monday, November 10, 2008. The award was presented by WTM’s chairman, Fiona Jeffery.

The WTM Global Award is in recognition of Kerkar’s remarkable contribution to the region’s travel and tourism industry.

On receiving the award, Kerkar said, “This accolade is not about me but a tribute to all the staff, past and present, who have made Cox and Kings a tremendous success for the past 250 years.”

Peter Kerkar has transformed Cox and Kings from a small UK tour operator into one of India’s largest travel companies providing high-class international and domestic travel through its Indian offices and global subsidiaries based in UK, Japan, UAE, and Singapore. The company has grown by over 25 percent year on year beating industry estimates and is a leading player in South Asia.

Under Kerkar’s leadership, the company has forayed into online travel as the Indian traveler becomes more mature and tech savvy. He has also launched an ambitious plan to expand the company’s offline presence with the launch of franchisees. In the last nine months, the organization has opened 30 Cox and Kings Outlets across the country, with a target to achieve 150 stores by December 2009.

His innovative contributions to the Indian travel industry include being a founder member of the Word Travel and Tourism Council, India through to introducing the country’s first pan-Indian luxury train, soon to be launched in partnership with the Indian Railways.

Kerkar concluded by saying, “I wish to thank my dedicated staff for keeping our wonderful tradition alive and making Cox and Kings the great company it is today.”
