TUNIS, Tunisia – Tunisia’s private Syphax Airlines has temporarily halted all flights, it said, citing a decision by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to suspend all activity with the airline.
“After the surprise … decision by IATA, Syphax … has been forced to suspend all flghts from and to Tunis from July 30, the airline said in a statement late on Thursday.
The company lawyer, Samia Maktouf, has however hinted that the situation is linked to “financial problems”.
She said that the “international and national context provoked a crisis that has led to the temporary suspension”.
Following its “financial problems”, Syphax Airlines lost a vital support on Wednesday when the International Air Transport Association (IATA) suspended all direct and indirect activities with the company.
The airline company was founded by Tunisian businessman Mohammed Frikha in 2011, after long-time president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali’s ouster.
Syphax had been flying to Turkey, France, Saudi Arabia and Canada, according to its website.
The North African country’s tourism industry has been hit by two major Islamist militant attacks this year.
