AirTran is the latest airline to charge for first bag, too

By orlandosentinel.com | Nov 12, 2008

Add AirTran Airways to the list of airlines charging passengers to check a single bag.

The Orlando-based airline said this morning that it will begin charging passengers $15 to check a single bag beginning with tickets today for travel on or after Dec. 5. The airline already charges $25 for a second checked bag.

The move isn't a surprise. AirTran executives had publicly signaled that they wanted to levy the first-bag fee, but said they wouldn't do it unless their biggest rival, Delta Air Lines, did so first -- and Delta announced its own $15 first-bag fee last week.

AirTran says business-class travelers and its A+ Rewards Elite members will not have to pay either the first or second bag charges.
