WASHINGTON, DC – US Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow issued the following statement congratulating the House Committee on Homeland Security on its markup of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) Improvement Act of 2015 (H.R. 158) and the PreCheck Expansion Act (H.R. 2843), two bills that will improve both the security and convenience of travel to and within the United States:
“H.R. 158, which would strengthen and expand the Visa Waiver Program, and H.R. 2843, which would expand enrollment in the Transportation Security Administration’s Preโ program for fliers, are both examples of effective legislating for which Congress deserves credit.
“The VWP has been a huge boost to U.S. security, as well as to the economy by facilitating travel for millions of pre-screened overseas visitors. Rep. Miller’s bill, by upgrading threat assessment and explicitly defining U.S. authority to suspend or revoke VWP status, takes an already-strong program and makes it even better without disrupting the benefits to legitimate travelers.
“PreCheck is another hugely successful program that further benefited from the Homeland Security Committee’s actions today. By expanding enrollment options to new secure technologies like kiosks and tablets, and adopting a phased approach to requiring multiple IDs for enrollment, the committee did much to secure a bright future for one of the most successful security programs of the post-9/11 era.
“Reps. Katko, Keating, Miller and Sanzhez, as well as Chairman McCaul and Ranking Member Thompson, all have the deepest gratitude of the travel community for advancing these helpful policies.”
