New perspectives at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne
LUCERNE, Switzerland - Diversity, fascination, and a hands-on experience - the Swiss Museum of Transport presents the development of transport and mobility, on road and rail, on the water, in the air, and in space. More than 3,000 exhibits in approximately 20,000 square meters of museum space testify to a history that is, quite literally, moving.
Attractions that are unique to Switzerland - the IMAX Theatre, the Planetarium, the Swissarena, and a great deal more - make a visit to the museum an enormously exciting and memorable experience.
The Swiss Museum of Transport is a place full of action for hands-on discoverers and is packed full of original milestones of transport history. In operation since July 1, 1959, and now welcoming over 870,000 visitors every year, the museum is proud of its reputation as Switzerland's most-visited museum. The museum is open 365 days a year.
In 2009, the museum will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. In a multi-phase project, various buildings are being newly erected, converted, and comprehensively revitalized. As the first project phase to be completed, FutureCom, the new entrance building, will open on November 4, 2008. FutureCom will accommodate a Media-Factory containing exciting, interactive, communication worlds; two new restaurants; and a state-of-the-art conference center. To coincide with the grand opening, the IMAX Theatre will usher in the era of 3D, digital technology, and the Planetarium will mark the event with a new program titled "Stella Nova."
The opening of a new Road Transport Hall and a multifunctional, outdoor arena will mark the 50th anniversary proper at the end of June 2009.
