The aftershocks experienced following Malaysia’s 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Friday, June 5, have now subsided. The worst damage was experienced on Mount Kinabalu, one of Southeast Asia’s highest peaks and a popular trekking destination for tourists. Unfortunately there were a total of 16 visitors, guides, and park rangers who lost their lives on that day.

Tourist, hotel, and aviation infrastructure, except for Mount Kinabalu are now fully operational, according to an update received from Destination Asia Malaysia. The climbing path and trails to the mountain are, however, damaged and will take at least three weeks to repair before re-opening again.

All other travel in the region remains unaffected at present. The situation is closely being monitored should the need arise to alter any travel plans.
