Hainan’s tourism authority released an index report on the island’s tourism development over the past five years on May 20, in an effort to evaluate the development of its tourism industry and provide a reference for potential industry investors.

The index report, which is the first of its kind for the provincial island to comprehensively evaluate its tourism sector, shows that modern service industries represented by tourism industry has become Hainan’s leading industries. And the province’s tourism resources development, tourism marketing capability as well as tourism reception capacity has improved significantly since the country launched the strategy to build the island into an international tourism island in 2009.

The evaluation system of Hainan’s Tourism Development Index (TDI), is composed of five first level indicators and 13 second level indicators. It appraises the development of Hainan’s tourism from five aspects, including tourism resources, tourism market, tourism service, growth potential and comprehensive environment.

According to the report, jointly compiled by the Hainan Provincial Tourism Development Commission, Chinese National Financial Information Center and Xinhua News Agency’s Hainan Bureau, Hainan’s TDI grew by 17.95 percent averagely each year from 2009 to reach 228.34 in 2014, showing that Hainan’s tourism industry has steady growth momentum, great growth potential and strong resistance to global economic downturns.

Lu Zhiyuan, assistant governor and director of the Hainan Provincial Tourism Development Commission, said that the report provides a comprehensive picture of Hainan’s tourism sector. He expected that the report will serve in the decision-making of local tourism authorities and offer investors with informative database support.

Cao Zhanzhong, deputy dean of Index Academy of Chinese National Financial Information Center, said the report aims to scan and evaluate the development trend of Hainan tourism industry from a strategic perspective and provide references for Hainan’s future development.
