Rome’s key airport, Fiumicino, closed after a fire broke out in an underground baggage storage area shortly after midnight Thursday morning. At least three people suffered from smoke inhalation. The terminal buildings were evacuated.
Passengers who happened to be at the airport at the time of the accident shared photos of thick smoke on social media.
The fire was recorded in terminal 3 used for most international flights. Unconfirmed reports say the airport will be closed until 14.00h
Nearly 20 fire-fighting trucks were at the airport. The main highway linking it to Rome was closed to allow emergency vehicles to pass.
Long delays and cancellations are expect today and possibly tomorrow.
