ITALY (eTN) – An agreement was reached at the headquarters of Foro Italico, the headquarters of Rome sports, between Giovanni Malago, President of CONI – the Italian Olympic Games Committee – and Silvano Cassano, CEO of Alitalia airlines.

The agreement sees Alitalia taking on the role as the official air carrier for travel being taken by all Italian sport teams. The airline will apply group rates for the athletes and representatives of the sports federations, as well as provide in flight and dedicated airports services.

The National and Olympic teams will have access to concessions on national, international, and intercontinental air tickets. The athletes and technicians of Italian sports can also make use of services and enjoy favorable conditions for transport of sports equipment which is vitally important for the many athletic disciplines.

The agreement between Alitalia and CONI is part of a long-time tight relationship that will see an ever-closer union among the highest sports institution and the leading Italian national airline, even in light of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

Giovanni Malago, President of CONI, said: “I am extremely happy, because today we celebrate a historic agreement for Italian sports and for the fundamental values that both companies have expressed and continue to express for the development of this country in terms also of traditions, values, culture, and customs. Itโ€™s a great pride for CONI and for the federations who can state that as from today โ€˜sports fly highโ€™ without neglecting the powerful message of unity and national identity.

โ€œThe construction of value represents today a mission necessary for the Olympic Committee, and the agreement with Alitalia will give the opportunity to include the value of this partnership into synergy with the federations and for the benefit of all stakeholders. A virtuoso, CONI, increasingly a hub which enhances its network, and the athletes and Italian sports-launching projects will enhance and promote the territory.”

Silvano Cassano, CEO of Alitalia, said: “We are very proud to accompany the athletes in all international competitions defending our colors and shared values. Fly Alitalia and the Italian union jack, is for Italian sports a beautiful message of unity and national identity. The story of Alitalia has always accompanied Italian sports – I think of Rome 1960, the return from Chile in 1976 by the tennis national team with the Davis Cup, the adventure of Azzurra in the America’s Cup in 1983, the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987, the Italian Soccer World Championship 1990, and travel to the Blue Avalanche Ski. We are and will always be next to the athletes to affirm the values of merit and sportss and celebrate all future triumphs.”
