An Asiana Airbus A320 skidded off the runway after landing at Hiroshima airport in Mihara, Japan.

An Asiana Airbus A320 skidded off the runway after landing at Hiroshima airport in Mihara, Japan. The aircraft had arrived from its departure city of Seoul, Korea, then slid onto an embankment shortly after 8 pm local time (1100 GMT).

Twenty-three people sustained minor injuries. There were 73 passengers and 7 crew onboard. The slides were deployed after landing, and the airplane was then met by fire engines and emergency personnel.

It is not yet clear what caused the skid. There was no rain, but there were strong winds at the time. Officials are looking into the possibility that the aircraft may have clipped an antenna that sends signals to the incoming plane.

According to a Japan newspaper report, passengers said there was turbulence approximately a half hour at the beginning of the flight, and smoke and fire was coming from an engine, but none of this has actually been confirmed.

In the picture of the aircraft, it looks as if the landing gear and wing were damaged.

Hiroshima airport closed for a period of undetermined time due to the incident which occurred on Tuesday.
