The Gold Coast welcomed AirAsia X on 03-Nov-07 on its first official service from Kuala Lumpur. AirAsia X will operate four times weekly service between Kuala Lumpur and the Gold Coast, using airlines A330-300 aircraft.

CEO of AirAsia X, Azran Osman-Rani said “The access to Gold Coast means a lot to us as this route will open more opportunities to enhance both hubs with greater international links in the region. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is the gateway to over 80 exotic and cosmopolitan destinations on AirAsia’s network, including Bangkok, Phuket, Langkawi, Sabah and Bali. Gold Coast is also the gateway to destinations within Queensland and Northern New South Wales”.

“The inaugural flight was sold out and we have already recorded a strong demand in November’s load of 70 %. This illustrates that our new service is indeed popular,” Azran added “The response has been overwhelming since we opened for sale on 29-Sep-07. To date, we have sold approximately 20,000 seats with bookings valued around RM15million (USD4.5 million)”.

Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer, Paul Donovan, said, “After years of planning and hard work, we are ecstatic to welcome our first direct connection with Asia. These new flights are the result of a strong partnership approach and significant investment by our Board, the Queensland Government and Gold Coast Tourism. The service marked a new era in international tourism growth for South East Queensland, especially the Gold Coast. The airline would be accommodated in the current main terminal building and would move into the airport’s expanded terminal once completed. This is just the tip of the iceberg. KL is a major hub for AirAsia X with connections from South East Asia, China and Macau. The airline already has a customer base of more than 40 million travellers and their emerging network will open the gates to all of the ASEAN countries and potentially Europe”.

AirAsia X is an affiliate of AirAsia, a Malaysian LCC launched in Dec-01 currently operating the largest and most modern fleet of A320s on short haul routes throughout Asia. In addition to the new Gold Coast service, AirAsia is planning expansion into IndoChina, Indonesia, Southern China and India in the near future.
