BILBAO, Spain – The Rector of the University of Deusto, José María Guibert, and the President of the World Leisure Organization, Roger Coles, had signed the agreement to establish the Technical Secretariat of World Leisure Organization at the University.

The University of Deusto and the World Leisure Organization signed today an agreement to relocate the Technical Secretariat of World Leisure Organization at the Institute of Leisure Studies of the University of Deusto. Deusto takes on the challenge of leading an international organization that for the first time in its nearly 60-year history moved its location from North America to Bilbao, a city that has based its urban regeneration and economic growth on leisure development.

Founded in 1952, World Leisure Organization is a world-wide, non-governmental association of persons and organizations dedicated to discovering and fostering those conditions best permitting leisure to serve as a force for human growth, development and well-being. The Institute of Leisure Studies at the University of Deusto, part of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, develops the leisure phenomenon in both its academic and research programs since 1988, the year of its creation. The knowledge of leisure, understood as a personal and social experience from a humanistic approach, is reached though the dimensions that shape their experiences and the areas in which is manifested: culture, sports, recreation, tourism, health and community development.

The rector of the University, Mr. José María Guibert Ucín and the president of WLO, Mr. Roger Coles, had signed the Memorandum of Understanding that summaries the joint effort of both institutions to expand WLO. The Treasurer, Andrew Williams, and the attorney of WLO, Jack N. Agrios, had taken part in an event that has been attended also by the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Mr. Álvaro de la Rica; the Dean of the Faculty Social and Human Sciences, Mr. José Antonio Rodríguez and the Director of the Institute of Leisure Studies, Ms. Cristina Ortega.
