The fire in Cape Town that has captured the world’s attention has continued and is now on its fifth day, but local reports are saying it is under control.

Thanks to the firefighting efforts against the fire, “the blaze [has] been largely contained by firefighting teams after a day of devastation.”

Officials on Wednesday told the press the fire that has devastated the South Peninsula over the past three days has been contained. “The weather conditions have brought welcome relief today and, according to the Joint Operations Centre, the fire has been contained. That is certainly good news for all concerned, but the job is not over just yet,” JP Smith, Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, was quoted as saying.

Reports are indicating that the fire is may have been started by a cigarette butt discarded by a motorist.

Although it is now contained, it is believed it could take another week or two to completely contain the fire, one of the worst to hit Cape Town in recent years.

The city also confirmed on Wednesday that the fire had damaged 13 properties, including the upmarket Tintswalo Lodge at the foot of Chapman’s Peak. It is estimated that about 4,000 hectares of land so far have been affected by the fire, which started in Muizenberg on Sunday.
