Airlines meet offer immediate solution to tackle crunching bite to airlines and airports

Yusof Sulaiman, eTN Asia Pacific  Oct 13, 2008

The world renowned annual airline and airport networking event, 14th World Route Development Forum, currently under way in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is offering an immediate "solution", a free service to carriers in a year which has seen airlines cut a large number of services.

Under 'Airline Opportunities' on its official website, airports can load both their new route opportunities and routes that are soon to be withdrawn. "Airlines can then search these routes and assess which city pair is right for them. Airports can literally put a route opportunity back into play within seconds. It is an instantaneous platform for airports to reach new carriers."

The uptake of the new service has been astonishing, according to organizer Route Development Group. At last count 1,500 route opportunities have been loaded by airports, with many more expected over the coming months.

Routes COO David Stroud, who is reportedly delighted with the response, said: "I am really pleased we have been able to use our website to provide a service that can help airports in this current difficult time. When existing airlines are scaling back, or sometimes withdrawing completely, airports need to cast the net immediately for alternatives."

Airports, whose lifeline depends on passenger traffic of airlines, need to find a new carrier before the current carrier ends its service, or at least as soon as possible after it has ceased operations. "In this way the market remains in place rather than passengers having to find new ways to do the journey," according to its press release.

Stroud also confirms airports and airlines attending this year's Routes in Kuala Lumpur will be receiving briefings on the new facility. "In these difficult times for the industry, we expect it to become a key new route development media for both parties over the forthcoming weeks and months."
