PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad — Police in Tobago say a Swedish couple was hacked to death at a home in a tourist district of the normally placid southern Caribbean island.

A police superintendent in the twin-island country of Trinidad and Tobago says robbery appears to be the motive in the attack.

Supt. Nadir Khan says the case remains under investigation.

Another police official in Tobago says a Trinidadian man was detained as a suspect but has not been charged.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case.

The couple, who had visited the island for extended periods for years, arrived in Tobago on Sunday.

Anna Sundsval, 62, and Oke Olsoon, 73, were found with multiple slash wounds Thursday.

Sundsval died at the scene and Olsoon at a hospital later.

Trinidad, the most industrialized island in the Caribbean, has struggled with violence for years, with more than 400 homicides so far in 2008. But Tobago is considered largely crime free, with only two others slaying this year.

As a Travel and Tourism Media Professional, assuming the Tourism Authority of Trinidad/Tobago as yet to do so, I suggest immediate and decisive action me taken utilizing all media resources to do damage control.

In this time of worldwide economic crisis, it is this type of news which will, easily, divert thousands of reluctant travelers to safer havens. I am willing to bet Trinidad/Tobago is already on many offical and unoffical Travel and Tourism danger warnings and alerts.
