The Northern Marianas governor has slammed the treatment of 147 Chinese tourists, who were made to go through a drug search on arriving at Saipan International Airport last week.

Governor Benigno Fitial says federal authorities deliberately embarrassed his administration through the treatment of the tourists, who were passengers on the inaugural Shanghai-Saipan charter flight route.

The Marianas Variety newspaper reports, the Chinese tourists were upset with their treatment and have vowed never to visit Saipan again.

The administration of the Northern Marianas has filed a lawsuit against a bill that would put the Commonwealth's immigration system under US federal law.

Governor Fitial believes American drug enforcement agency staff at the airport targetted the Chinese tourists, in retaliation against the lawsuit.
