LOS ANGELES, California – Maya Ubud Resort & Spa in Bali was one of the first resorts in Ubud to be awarded Green Globe certification and over the years has maintained continued improvement and active engagement in sustainability in all areas of its operations.

The Petanu River valley to the east and the verdant rice fields of Peliatan on the west form the natural borders of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa. This ten-hectare tract of land is a tranquil haven of tropical gardens and 108 architect-designed thatched private pool villas and luxury guestrooms.

First certified in 2011, the resort maintains a balance between the propertyโ€™s location and surrounding environment. Mr. Romy Anggara, Executive Assistant Manager, personally oversees a long list of activities that help meet Green Globe criteria and play an integral role in better environmental outcomes.

Mr. Romy Anggara said, โ€œSome of the sustainability achievements include the implementation of energy saving bulbs that significantly reduce energy consumption. We practice Reduce and Recycle carefully and also proudly produce our own herbs and spices organically.โ€

A comprehensive sustainability management plan is in place ensuring long term profitability for the hotel which will benefit its owners, its employees and its neighbors. The resort and its facilities occupy only 20% of the resortโ€™s 10 hectares of land area. The remainder of the land has been left in its natural state or been landscaped with native trees, rare tree species such as banyan, Boni (Antidesma Bunius) and Kererek (Sapirdus Rarak) and tropical flowers.

In compliance with environmental legislation the resort takes a proactive approach by seeking to conserve natural resources through the responsible use of energy, water and materials. This year energy reduction targets have been set for electricity and gas usage. Furthermore, fuel (diesel) usage is expected to drop significantly to 54%; the result of a boiler being replaced by a heat driven pump.

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa staff attend quarterly training sessions to promote awareness of energy and water conservation, and waste management in and around the resort. Green Team members are also active in creating awareness of environmental issues. And the entire team regularly gets down and dirty to clean up the Petanu River and also work to educate the local community on the importance of following environmentally friendly policies.

Guests are also invited to participate in environmental initiatives including tree planting and sponsorship of the Friends of National Park Foundation (FNPF). This non-profit organization in Nusa Penida focuses on reforestation programs and preservation of endangered bird species.

Being re-certificated by Green Globe is a major accomplishment and the resort is committed to incorporating sustainable tourism principles and practices into its operations. Its Green purchasing policy is reviewed annually with eco-friendly suppliers preferred. Compost for the gardens and grounds is purchased from a local recycling facility and housekeeping use low toxic pest control products and bio-degradable products.

As part of Maya Ubud Resort & Spaโ€™s socio-cultural programs, guests can experience a greater understanding of Balinese culture and customs by visiting temples, villages, historical sites and local organizations. Local arts and crafts are also exhibited and sold at the resort to promote native handicrafts. And cultural events feature local dancers and Balinese cooking classes.

Community support is another key area for sustainable management with over one third of the resort staff recruited from neighboring villages. Also, items no longer used by the resort such as towels, bed linen, books, magazines, china and glassware are regularly donated to orphanages and foundations in the local area.
