LA PAZ, Bolivia – Tourists from Spain visiting Bolivia are the ones who spend the most and remain in the country the longest, according to a study released by the Tourism Statistical Information System, or SIET.

The report entitled “Tourism Receiving and Sending Survey 2014,” which was prepared by SIET, the National Statistics Institute, the Bolivian Central Bank, the General Immigration Directorate and the Vice Ministry of Tourism.

The report, published on the Central Bank’s Web site, says that Spanish residents – which may include foreigners living in Spain – visiting Bolivia spend an average of about $1,866 in the South American country, compared to an average of $723 for tourists in general.

Besides the figures for Spain, the report says that Panamanian residents spend $1,510, Swiss residents $1,343, Venezuelan residents $1,310 and U.S. residents $1,233 when they visit Bolivia, on average.

Per day, the tourists who spend the most in Bolivia come from Switzerland, spending $96.

Tourists from Spain stay the longest in the South American country, remaining there for an average of 48 days, while U.S. and Venezuelan tourists stay for 27 days each and Mexican tourists stay for 26 days, on average.

The countries visited most by Bolivians during 2014 were Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, the United States, Spain, Paraguay, Colombia, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Ecuador, the report found, and Bolivians stayed on vacation abroad for an average of 20 days spending $69 per day and $654 per person per trip.

To prepare the study, SIET carried out 8,462 surveys during the course of 2014 at Bolivia’s three main airports and at 13 border crossing points.
