ATHENS, Greece – Greece was the tourist destination showing the largest increase in demand in Germany.

ATHENS, Greece – Greece was the tourist destination showing the largest increase in demand in Germany. More than two million German tourists traveled to Greece by plane over the summer, according to the German statistical office. In fact, 2,060,000 Germans made the trip to Greece, between April and October 2014. This number shows an 18.6% increase, compared to 2013 when the total number of tourists rose to 1,860,000.

According to German media, Greeceโ€™s success is expected to continue in 2015 with an even larger increase. โ€œNo other country has shown such a high increase in 2014,โ€ says Norbert Fiebig, president of DRV, the largest German tour operator and travel agency association. All major German tour operators have expanded their packages to Greece.

In fact, TUI has arranged to increase its airline seats on flights to Greece by 10% over the next year. The Greek islands and especially Crete, Rhodes and Kos were some of the most popular destinations. The number of German tourists who visited Greece showed a significant increase, despite Egyptโ€™s recovery in regards to tourism. People believe that the most logical explanation behind the increase is the fact that Greeceโ€™s prices have remained stable whereas price have risen in other popular European destinations. However, a DER Touristik executive, Renรฉ Herzog claims, that โ€œGermans have missed Greece.โ€
