A delegation from Seychelles led by Principal Secretary for Tourism Anne Lafortune flew to Reunion Island last week to take part in the Festival Liberte Metisse from December 19-21. The festival is a Vanilla Islandsโ€™ event organized by the Regional Council of Reunion Island. The Seychelles National Troupe, representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and from the Seychelles Tourism Board, and Donatien Freminot, who is a coconut shell artisan, were also part of the delegation.

The program for this fifth festival was a rich and very attractive one. A lot of well-known artists from the region performed during the three days of the festival. The Nationale Troupe from Seychelles under the leadership of Marietta Matombe was given the honor to kick-start the official ceremony.

This yearโ€™s Festival Liberte Metisse was marked by the handing over of the chairmanship of the Vanilla Islands organization, which Mrs. Lafortune was invited to attend. Ramarcel Benjamina Ramanantsoa, Minister for Tourism for Madagascar, succeeded Didier Robert, Senator and President of the Reunion Regional Council. For the Seychelles Tourism Board, the Festival Liberte Metisse is a chance to promote the destination and the culture of the country as well.

Thanks to the traditional clothing and musical instruments, visitors will be able to have a better understanding of the Seychellois culture and way of life. The National History Museum assistant curator Jeanne Pothin was glad to share her knowledge about the traditions from Seychelles while handicrafts from Seychelles was well represented by Mr. Freminot. He displayed his items and demonstrated how to make handicrafts with coconut shells.

During the three days, the delegation was happy and proud to promote the assets of Seychelles, which included showcasing its beautiful culture. On Sunday, the National Troupe took part in the closing parade to showcase the colors of the islands.
