LOS ANGELES, California – Mövenpick Hotel’s-Hertogenbosch overlooks lake Provinciehuis just outside the historical city center of den Bosch (the Forest) in The Netherlands. Canals weave between the gothic St. John’s Cathedral and medieval fortified city walls or bastions. There are many museums to visit also, one of which is dedicated to the fifteenth century painter Jheronimus Bosch.
Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is the most Green Globe certified hotel group in the world. For the third year running Mövenpick Hotel’s-Hertogenbosch has been certified in recognition of its commitment to sustainable objectives.
Suzan Strang, Human Resources Manager at Mövenpick Hotel’s-Hertogenbosch said, “We are very proud with the re-certification by Green Globe. Certification first started in 2011 and we are still on top, improving sustainability in every way.”
A daily energy monitoring system, supported by a monthly analysis designed by Green Globe Preferred Partner FARNEK, compares the hotel’s achievements against industry benchmarks. To reduce energy usage LED lights and timed switches or motion sensors are used in public areas and back of house offices. All guest rooms also feature energy saving systems such as lights automatically turning off once keycards are removed. The forecast energy savings are predicted to be around 10%.
Water usage is also monitored and water reduction targets set. Water saving devices have been fitted on shower heads and taps in guest bathrooms, the Wellness facility and public restrooms. Guests are invited to contribute to saving water by re-using towels and sheets.
In accordance with local government waste management regulations, Mövenpick Hotel’s-Hertogenbosch recycles paper, plastic and glass items. All soap and detergent are stored in dispensers in public and staff toilets, kitchens and housekeeping departments, and use of environmentally friendly chemicals is preferred. Furthermore, the majority of products purchased by the kitchens are bought in bulk packaging to reduce wastage.
The hotel regards social responsibility towards staff and the wider communities as fundamental in its sustainability management plan. To support local businesses, Food & Beverage departments source 90% of produce from local suppliers and farmers. And sustainable development is promoted amongst associates through on-going training, newsletters and Shine, the in-house sustainability program.
“Last year the sustainability approach of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has been updated with Shine,” explained Suzan Strang. “The global objective of this program is, ‘To positively impact the environment, our people and the local communities in which we are present.’ And for this year our focus has been to support education in local communities.”
The hotel supports Natuurmonumenten, a society representing over thirteen local district committees to discuss local issues; the Climate Neutral Group dedicated to reducing carbon emissions; and Stichting AAP a European rescue center for primates and other exotic animals that have been mistreated.
