LOS ANGELES, California – With the Mediterranean on its doorstep the InterContinental Carlton Cannes is one of the world’s most prestigious hotels. A symbol of refinement and elegance with its Belle Epoque façade, the hotel encapsulates the quintessential French Riviera lifestyle celebrated globally by movie stars, celebrities and discerning travelers alike. The Government of France also acknowledges the hotel’s cultural significance, listing the property as a National Historic Building.

The InterContinental Carlton Cannes recognizes its Green Globe certification as a testament to the property’s commitment and vision to sustainable objectives with long-term environmental, economic and social benefits.

François Chopinet, General Manager of the InterContinental Carlton Cannes said, “At the InterContinental Carlton, our environmental values are at the heart of our managerial concerns. Our mission is to preserve nature, minimize our impact and thus protect the environment.”

A Sustainable Development Charter developed by the hotel outlines key areas that are targeted by setting sustainable goals and procedures, which have become part of daily life at the InterContinental Carlton Cannes. All staff are familiar with the hotel’s eco-responsible policies. And IHG’s in-house Green Engage system continually monitors usage of electricity, gas and water as well as waste management.

As a result of this effective sustainability management 500kW to 600 kW of energy are saved per day. Initiatives such as the installation of low energy light bulbs and turning off computers at the end of the day make a significant contribution to this reduction. The introduction of dual flush toilets and thermostatic shower mixing valves, along with other water saving devices, save from 20 to 30 cubic meters of water per day.

Another of the hotel’s daily initiatives is to reduce the effects of deforestation by ensuring all written promotional material is communicated in electronic form such as e-brochures, e-newsletters and e-flyers. In addition, message recipients are encouraged to save paper and only print if necessary, while “green” printers are set to double sided, black and white options.

All departments at the InterContinental Carlton Cannes share the role of reducing the property’s carbon footprint. Transportation management has become a main focus and sales teams now use trains for business trips in France instead of flying by plane. Electric powered vehicles are utilized to collect goods from local businesses lowering dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions. And to lead by example General Manager Chopinet also commutes by a hybrid car.

Staff and guests alike continue to actively contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by becoming involved with the eco-friendly efforts at the hotel. Currently there are over 200 activities designed specifically for guests to help make a contribution to sustainability. Whilst hotel associates receive regular training on sustainable development from the first induction session and throughout their career.
