The US Department of Commerce today announced that 6.1 million international visitors traveled to the United States in September 2014, a two percent increase over September 2013.

The US Department of Commerce today announced that 6.1 million international visitors traveled to the United States in September 2014, a two percent increase over September 2013. September marks the 9th consecutive month of increases in 2014 in total US visits. For the first nine months of 2014, visitation (56.4 million) was up seven percent compared to the same period in 2013.

HIGHLIGHTS

Top Markets

โ€ข The top inbound markets continued to be Canada and Mexico. Non-resident visits from Canada decreased six percent while visits from Mexico increased five percent.

โ€ข The United Kingdom (0%), Japan (-3%) and the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China (20%) rounded out the top five.

โ€ข In September 2014, four of the top 10 countries posted increases in non-resident visits.

โ€ข Non-resident visitation from two of the top 10 countries registered double-digit increases.

โ€ข During the first nine months of 2014, eight of the top 10 countries (sort based on September 2014) posted increases in visitation to the United States.

Regional Markets

โ€ข Eight of the nine major overseas regional markets recorded increases in non-resident visits to the United States in September 2014: Western Europe (1%), Asia (6%), South America (7%), Middle East (16%), the Caribbean (18%), Central America (25%), Eastern Europe (8%) and Africa (15%). At the same time, non-resident visits from Oceania were flat (0%).

Non-Resident Visits from Overseas Countries

โ€ข In September 2014, non-resident visits from overseas countries (3.0 million) were up five percent over September 2013, accounting for 50 percent of total international visits to the United States.

โ€ข September YTD 2014, overseas resident visits (25.9 million) were up eight percent compared to the same period of 2013.
Top Ports: YTD September 2014

โ€ข YTD September 2014, visitation through the top 15 ports of entry accounted for 82 percent of all overseas visits-slightly below last year.

โ€ข The top three ports (New York (JFK), Miami and Los Angeles) accounted for 40 percent of all overseas arrivals-nearly one percentage point above last year.

โ€ข Thirteen of the top 15 ports recorded increases in arrivals in the first nine months of 2014. Five of these ports recorded double-digit increases.
