R.O.A.R.: Spirit Airlines ad crashes to new lows
Have you noticed how sleazy the junk emails from Spirit Airlines have become? Subject lines like "We're having a threesome," "We're proud of our DDs," "Don't go south without protection," "Need some strange?" or "Barely legal fares - from only 18¢" are totally inappropriate for an airline that markets family vacation destinations. Let's not forget their trashy-titled marketing push, the "M.I.L.F sale."
When conceptualized in conjunction with the other sexually provocative catch phrases, their "red light" specials' signature mark sinks swiftly into the gutter.
When I fly to Las Vegas, it's not because "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas," it's because I like Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, and Celine Dion concerts. No thank you, Spirit Airlines, I'm happily married and I don't "need some strange."
Can you imagine on an airplane full of children headed to Disney World hearing a kid ask his mother "Mommy, what is a M.I.L.F.?"
What is the likelihood that Spirit Airlines has no clue that M.I.L.F. refers to a "Mom I'd like to [fornicate]."
As if their [Spirit Airlines] marketing personnel have never seen American Pie nor ever had internet access.
This is such an assault on women everywhere. Women are not pieces of meat for corporations to exploit.
Of course, many corporations will stoop to any level to snare a customer; Spirit has their "mullet sale." According to phrases.org.UK , "A mullet, which is (literally) a fish reportedly so stupid that it will take almost any bait, was adopted as slang by stock brokerage "boiler room" operators as a term for an investor gullible enough to fall for any sales pitch revolving around a "story" stock." Does Spirit Airlines consider Americans so stupid they will fall for any sale, even their "mullet" sale?
What kind of integrity does Spirit Airlines have? If I weren't a travel agent I'd totally ignore them, but since I earn my living in the same industry as they, their behavior reflects on all sellers of travel.
This week, Spirit Airlines unveiled plans to sell space on overhead bins, tray tables and window panels to advertisers. What kind of filth (pun intended) could we find on Spirit Airlines' tray tables? I hope I don't have to see ads on liftable tray tables that read: "Viagra helps you get it up."

Beth, flight attendants tend to be blond, stupid, and promiscuous. I don´t think you have the expertise to state with objectivity which "class" of flyers are to be found on Spirit Airlines. I am aware of millionaires who fly on Spirit. These millionaires are neither white trash nor from the ghetto. IF it were true that Spirit caters to white trash, they would not be flying to San Pedro Sula, Guatemala City, San Jose Costa Rica, or Lima. There is no study offering conclusive evidence that white trash prefers to vacation in Machu Picchu. Even millionaires enjoy bargains...actually, if you had any clue about demographics you would know that millionaires tend to be thrifty. When Spirit flies to Orlando, it is not to service white trash or the ghetto crowd... it is to fly families to Disney or for similar purposes. There is nothing "low class" about a consumer who chooses Spirit to fly to a family destination. Actually, the family might choose Spirit because the flight is at a convenient hour, or has non-stop flights.
I wish many of you would stay on point, and stop bringing these trivial off topic comments into this.
Read the jist of it and stop bitching about the spelling or the Caps!
The bottom line is, what do you think of this ad campaign.
I think their ads are coarse also.
Spirit's ad compaign is like the airline, aimed at a certain class of traveler. So, it might be perfect for their market.
We do not promote or sell Spirit.
I was a flight attendant back in the late 1960's to early 70's for one of the majors, who is still flying.
Our carrier had awards each year for the flight attendants that received the most passenger thank you letters and many of us received hundreds.
Those were the days when we warmly greeted passengers when they boarded andthanked EACH one when they deplaned, and most thanked us.
The airlines have clearly changed since then. You get what you pay for.
Mario claims he KNOWS Spirit's ads are only acceptable/likeable to the gay taste.
Mario is dead wrong.
Gays don't like this smut as much as the next person.
Don't villify gays; it's not your place. Gay people have nothing to do with the original story.
Your comment is as inflammatory as saying "Lying is acceptable/likable only to men named MARIO."
Well, I don't know if you have ever noticed, Spirit carries the lowest of low when it comes to seasoned travelers. Most customers who fly on spirit are white trash, or from the ghetto. It is so sad that they are taking the "UGLY AMERICAN" throughout the Carribean and Central America. Greyhound types now are saturating the skies. They actually know the customer base they are serving, hence the crude marketing.
"I am also gay and my husband is also a physician"
I have gay friends and acquantainces and know these ads are only acceptable/likable to the gay taste. I doubt Spirit ever did a focus group on this before launching these ads, Spirit too cheap! Otherwise they would've found out, while an attention-getter no doubt, most normal people would find these ads very distasteful.
THANK YOU Maryann... You would think we were debating the AIDS epidemic in Africa or something. Between Sarah's second grade school teacher sister and the other bible thumper, I feel like McCain might really win this election. Just to clear a few things up for the school teacher, she needs to figure out the difference between tools and comprehension. "Better to be thought a fool, then opening your mouth and remove all doubt". For the record, I actually did get past second grade and now I am a practicing Oncologist. I am also gay and my husband is also a physician who does research in both Paris and the United States. So, Sarah's sister and Bible Thumper, I really do think you guys need to "lighten up" as Maryann said and don't throw rocks at glass houses....
Let's just all wish Spirit the best of luck, as many people and their families depend on it.
Antoine
Lighten up! Spirit is just having some fun with humor. Life is too short to spend any time at all worrying about such trivia.
Who wrote this comment? Is it an employee of Spirit Airlines? Antoine (the commentator) is babbling on with illogical arguments, miserably trying to refute Anton (the writer of the article).
Firstly, Antoine the commentator needs to return to elementary school, specifically the second grade, to learn basic English grammar. The word "man" is not capitalized.
Secondly, if the commentator had any internet skills he would know who Anton Anderssen is.
Thirdly, Anton Anderssen's sexuality is irrelevant - people of all sexualities have been known to listen to Bette Midler, Barry Manilow and Celine Dion.
Fourthly, Anton Anderssen is not closeted. He is openly gay and is a strong supporter of women's rights.
The commentator wrote: "If it is a woman, she sounds like Sara Palin." Apparently the commentator wants to appear well-read about politics. Sorry, her first name is Sarah, not Sara. You know very little about politics or how women think, Mr. Commentator.
Mr. Commentator wrote: "Whoever it was had to define some of Spirit's advertising campaign slogans." Well, yes, that's the entire purpose of the article. Mr. Commentator's arguments have evidenced he has no skills for basic logic.
Mr. Commentator wrote: "Another good thing; I am certainly glad he/she/it knows where their morals stand, as they cannot "ignore" them, because of MONEY."
Oh really? Not everyone on the planet is a prostitute. Just because Mr. Commentator can ignore his morality where money is concerned, it doesn't mean the rest of the planet does. Wake up, Mr. Commentator, most women are not prostitutes. Most women find pornography exploitive, and MILF is inextricably tied to pornography.
Mr. Commentator wrote: "I know many people that would ignore them (morals) if they were so against an individual's morals or ethics. Greedy little Travel Agent!" It is true, Mr. Commentator may indeed know many people who lack morals. That doesn't mean everyone else on the planet does. Go back to 2nd grade, where you can learn the words "travel agent" are not capitalized. While you are there, learn some basic morals.
Mr. Commentator wrote: "With all of the airlines having so much trouble now, I wish Spirit Airlines a lot of Luck!"
The word luck is not capitalized. Please go back to 2nd grade and learn basic grammar.
Many people do agree with Mr. Commentator's wishing Spirit Airlines a lot of luck. I wish them a lot of luck, too. The point of the article is you don't need to become sleazy to sell low fares. RyanAir.com sells low fares and they are never sleazy. No one is arguing against low fares, but Mr. Commentator fails to grasp this concept. The whole point of the article is low fares do not have to be associated with sleaze.
If Mr. Commentator goes back to 2nd grade and goes through school again, he may learn how to read and understand articles better.
Rock on you good thing Spirit Airlines I applaude for making mundane flying a little more interesting. Is it a sly coincidence that this airline is called Spirit? For all the namby pamby do gooders out there who are giving out about their advertising tactic's #1 who said anything about the barely legal fares representing women? #2 milf also comes up for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front so who are we more afraid of now...... #3 A mullet where i am from is a particular style of haircut, not to my liking but everyone is different. And as for them selling advertising space on their planes, if that is what it takes for them to stay afloat in these testing economic times are you going to be happier if they still operate and you can sell their flights to your customers or keep complaining when they go bust and further diminish your options of selling tickets? If you dont like it all well and good everyone is entitled to their opinion just as I am to mine.... M'Kay?
Antoine, I cannot DISagree with you more. Your attack on the author (gays and Sarah Palin) reduces the validity of your comments to nothing more than a waste of e-space. The author's points are both thoughtful and sound... does a company need to use blatent sexual innuendo to sell product? Finally, I'm not sure how the author's argument against sleazy advertising in our industry makes him a "greedy little travel agent." Perhaps, Antoine, you should write a draft of your attacking comments on a piece of paper to satisfy your need to belittle, then throw it in the garbage and spare the rest of us your pointless dribble.
Who wrote this? If it is a Man, he is certainly a closeted gay man; "When I fly to Las Vegas...it's because I like Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, and Celine Dion concerts". If it is a woman, she sounds like Sara Palin. Whoever it was had to define some of Spirit's advertising campaign slogans. Another good thing; I am certainly glad he/she/it knows where their morals stand, as they cannot "ignore" them, because of MONEY. I know many people that would ignore them if they were so against an individual's morals or ethics. Greedy little Travel Agent! With all of the airlines having so much trouble now, I wish Spirit Airlines a lot of Luck!
