Expect Disruption In Travel Plans
Travel advisory alert - strike in Maldives
voices.com
Hotel and resort workers in Maldives, organized through the Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM), have announced an indefinite strike in hotels, resorts, airports and other tourist enterprises from October 5, in support of their demand that basic labor rights for hotel and resort workers be enshrined in the laws of the country.
The hotel and resort industry of the Maldives accounts for more than 30 percent of the country’s national income yet employees in the industry have been specifically excluded from the new law which governs employment relations.
Travelers may, therefore, expect to experience disruption in their travel plans, a circumstance which TEAM deeply regrets.

Guys - The Team
Thanks for delaying demonstaration against the rights neglected. But I urge to continue as projected if the amendments were not mediated.
The Tourism Employees’ Association Maldives (TEAM) has delayed an industry-wide strike planned for 5 October, after MPs “guaranteed” legal changes would be made on 6 October, a TEAM spokesperson said.
The strike will now go ahead on 7 October – just one day before presidential elections – if amendments to the law do not pass on 6 October, according to Mohamed Mihad of TEAM.
TEAM had threatened up to 20,000 tourism workers would take industrial action on 5 October if they were not accorded new legal rights already received by others under the Employment Act.
My forecast was correct (see the above comment). Now the strike is postponed.
As I mentioned the intention of tourism staff is not just to make a strike, but to get their rights by pressuring the concerned parties. Because when Maldives have a developed industry still some staff are living in the resorts like living in a “luxury jail” where they don’t get the basic human rights while tourists enjoy their holiday. However Maldivains do care about the tourists, so they will not strike if they are provided with the basic needs of work and life.
I have written to you about the concern of political situation in the Maldives.
Now that a amended constitution has pass from the parliament with the effort and street demonstration, which I am sure you are aware of in the Maldives. Yet again they have not given any priority to hospitality employees as well as employee who work on the multi billion dollars tourism industry in the Maldives.
I am writing to you to inform, that we are planning a demonstration on October 5th 2008 to show the world, how the Maldivian government and the parliamentarian have no concern about our grievances of better working conditions in the resorts , minimum salary, health care and working hours.
All the political parties have been telling us it is going to be better, for the last one year. We have waited patiently without any action as tourism industry is our bread basket. We have run out of time and we have no choice but to come out on the streets on Male, capital of Maldives, to fight for our rights regarding minimum salary ,working hours and health care
It is our hope and trust that you will stand by us in our struggle to fight for minimum wages, better working conditions and health care, for the employees of Tourism Industry in the Maldives.
Thank you and waiting for a reply
the strike will happen. but it should not happen. because the underlying causes for the strike will be addressed by whoever comes to power in the next election. if incumbent president gayoom were to win he will try to appease the resort boys just to be seen doing a good deed to the resort boys. also if somebody from another party wins they too will want to appease the masses and do whatever they can to be seen as the saviour. so the case for strike is not that important now. but it will go on.

Lets c if the government has the nerve to stand on their decisions, lets c who wins... the question is would they risk losing 30% of the GDP, or would they rather solve the issue before it fires back? Bottom line is, we are all fighting for our rights. I personally wouldn’t take a step to hurt a guest on their vacation. But we got to do the right thing to live a life… God help us...
Are you a Maldivian? are you a Human?
i am telling you if you don't know... we are fighting for our rights, our brother's and sisters rights and for the next generation...
someone has to do this.. otherwise we might have to wait for another 30 years..
so better think before you post stuff like that.
Why should the tourists and the tourism industry suffer just because Parliment cannot get things done quickly?
This is crazy. Resorts should dismiss those who disrupt business.
The strike would happen definitely, no question about it unless Toutism Employees get their rights before the day.
Strike is the only way for Tourism Employees to fight for their rights.
Yes. It’s announced that TEAM (Tourism Employees Association of Maldives) is organizing a strike because they believe that their rights are not protected by the newly passed employment law by the parliament. However what I feel is that this strike will not happen because the employees care about the tourists and they know a major portion of the economy of the country is based on tourism. Their objective is to pressure the concerned authorities to protect the employee’s rights. So the issue is schedules for discussion in the parliament on 5th October. Let’s hope everything will go smoothly.
