For Lars and Antje Rau, Sunday, 2October 26, 2014, will be one of their memorable days as they experienced a true traditional Creole wedding in Seychelles. They were the chosen couple for this yearโ€™s traditional wedding in the Seychelles as part of the 29th edition of the island’s Festival Kreol.

Known as Tifin, the event is held in the hall of the district administration office of the popular Beau Vallon district, located in the Northern part of Mahe island.

Tifin originally means light snacks, were traditionally served by our elders during tea time and in feasts like weddings, anniversary ceremonies, birthdays and christenings among others.
Tourism and Culture Alain St.Ange and principal secretary for culture Benjamine Rose were among those present for the wedding ceremony last Sunday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Rau from Germany were already married but agreed to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime event in Seychelles.

The wedding ceremony started with a procession which is known as Laserenad in the Seychellois Creole language.

The couple, their bridesmaids and guests walked along the main road until the wedding venue. They sang all along as they marched behind the couple, while flower girls showered Mr and Mrs Rau with confetti.
Inside the well-decorated area, guests settled in while drinks โ€“ not forgetting the traditional Marie Brizard – were being served, and traditional songs were played.

Speeches and songs in honour of the bride and groom were all part of the ceremony.

Congratulating the couple, Minister St.Ange said it is an honour to have the Rauโ€™s taking part in such a great celebration.

He added that traditional weddings should remain part of our rich cultural heritage and more young Seychellois encouraged to also tie the knot this way.
