BUTTYSON KANDIMBA, Solwezi – Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB) managing director Felix Chaila has called for the promotion of domestic tourism for the sector to grow and create jobs.

Mr Chaila said the tourism sector has potential to create jobs but there is need to vigorously promote domestic tourism if the sector is to succeed.

He said the ZTB has since embarked on a campaign to sensitise people on the benefits of tourism especially to the local people as the country is endowed with abundant natural resources which have not been exploited.

โ€œYou are aware that on June 17 this year, the Zambia Tourism Board launched the domestic tourism campaign to enlighten people on the benefits of the tourism sector because it has become evident that tourism is high in job creation,โ€ Mr Chaila said.

He was speaking in Solwezi on Tuesday when he paid a courtesy call on North-Western Province deputy permanent secretary Alfred Chiingi at his office.

Mr Chaila said the ZTB has partnered with local authorities to market and promote local tourism sites across the country.

โ€œLike in the case of Solwezi, we have beautiful sites like the Kifubwa engravings, the Mutanda falls and as North-Western this is home to the source of the might Zambezi River and all these are sites that we need to promote locally to attract tourists from outside,โ€ he said.

Mr Chaila said the ZTB will also engage the Ministry of Tourism and Arts to strengthen the capacity of local authorities to promote tourism in their respective areas.

And Mr Chiingi commended the ZTB for the initiative saying domestic tourism is important to the growth of the sector.

โ€œFor tourism to be sustainable, I think we should not only depend on people from outside,โ€ Mr Chiingi said.
