PANAJI, India (eTN) - Authorities have deployed thousands of police in the popular Indian resort of Goa to protect tourists.

The move came after a group protesting the building of industrial parks said it could not ensure the safety of visitors. It said that its protests would intensify Friday, warning tourists to leave because things may take an "ugly turn."

In response, the government deployed 6,000 police and called in a 300-strong special paramilitary force to protect visitors in the beaches and towns.

The group says that setting up industrial parks, designed to attract foreign investment, would ruin the delicate ecology and unique character of the region.

Goa is a palm-fringed state on India's western coast popular with foreigners.
