SAN DIEGO, CA – Pendry San Diego, a new 317-room, $100-million-plus upscale hotel, broke ground yesterday in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. The hotel, located three blocks north of the San Diego Convention Center, is expected to open in the summer of 2016, reports U-T San Diego.

Pendry appears to be the new boutique brand of Montage Hotels and Resorts, which up to now has operated luxury hotels.

The property will reportedly include several restaurants and bars, including an underground nightclub and a beer hall. An outdoor pool, spa, grill and fitness area will be located on a third floor deck. There will also be a 8,600-square-foot ballroom and 22,000 square feet of meeting space.

“We envision this will be the hub for visitors and the community,” said Alan Fuerstman, founder and CEO of Montage Hotels and Resorts. U-T san Doego reports that Fuerstman surveyed the Gaslamp Quarter’s other hotels and decided a new luxury brand “lifestyle” hotel would appeal to a younger set.

Montage reportedly received trademark approval in both Britain and the U.S. to use the Pendry name.
