SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Several years ago, rumors began circulating that Puerto Rico would complete its luxury hotel scene with a new Four Seasons resort. We met up with several representatives of Puerto Rico’s tourism scene yesterday, including President and CEO of Meet Puerto Rico Milton Segarra, and learned that the paperwork has been signed and the hotel is finally moving ahead.

The property is expected to open on the island’s east coast, about 15 minutes from El Conquistador, and will have an estimated 300 rooms. (No word yet on event space or other perks.) The hotel is expected to break ground this quarter and will require 24-30 months to complete.

Other luxury hotels slated to open in Puerto Rico include a JW Marriott, while the Condado Vanderbilt is slated to complete its multi-year renovation in December. The hotel will be geared for events, with a large ballroom that can accommodate 400 people.

Puerto Rico’s events scene is gaining strength: Twenty-two group trips and events are scheduled for October with a total of 10,870 hotel nights and a contribution of $6 million to the economy. Groups include the American Society of Clinical Oncologist 2014 Annual Meeting and the USA Training Center Professional Showcase, a forum for where 360 quality baseball players to demonstrate their skills in front of Major League Baseball (MLB) and independent baseball scouts.
