PARIS – Judicial officials say the pilot of a large tourist boat is facing preliminary charges in connection with last weekend’s deadly sinking of a small boat on the Seine river.

Officials say the preliminary charges include manslaughter, speeding and drug use.

Officials say the pilot acknowledged having smoked cannabis the day before Saturday’s accident. He has also acknowledged having exceeded the 12 kph (7 mph) speed limit for boats on the Seine.

Investigators say the accident appears to have happened when the tourist boat hit a smaller boat carrying 12 people. A 6-year-old child and an adult died in the accident.

Preliminary charges give judges time to investigate before ordering a trial of dropping charges.
