By tradingmarkets.com | Sep 16, 2008

UK-based airline bmi has made no comment on reports that it has been approached by Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, regarding a possible merger.

Privately-owned bmi is the second biggest airline at London's Heathrow Airport after British Airways.

The Sunday Times reported yesterday (14 September) that Etihad is believed to have held initial talks with bmi and its major shareholder Lufthansa about a possible deal which values bmi at GBP600m.

Etihad has also not commented, except to say that it had had "a number of discussions with a variety of carriers" but "no firm talks [were] planned", the BBC reported.
