BAREILLY, India – In a bid to outsmart the police, smugglers used a tourist bus to ferry 32 cattle heads for slaughter to Rampur district. Police, along with Pilibhit MP Maneka Gandhi’s NGO People For Animals (PFA), intercepted the bus in Meergunj Tehsil on Saturday.

According to reports, PFA volunteers and local convenor Satish Yadav tipped off cops at Meergunj police station about a possible consignment of animals being taken to Rampur via Bareilly. Police started intensive checking in the area after the tip-off.

The police intercepted a bus coming from Unnao and signaled it to stop. The driver fled on seeing the police team, leaving the vehicle behind.

Police found that the smugglers had removed the seats inside the bus and herded animals in by tying their legs with nylon ropes and sedating them. Thirt-two animals were found inside the bus, out of which two had already died due to suffocation. Yadav said that four other animals were in a serious condition.

According to inspector MM Khan, the rescued animals have been sent to a cow protection shed in Moradabad. Those who were not in a condition to be moved have been admitted to a government veterinary hospital in the city for treatment.

He added that a case under Section 3/5 and 5/8 of Animal Cruelty act has been registered against unidentified persons.
