The Banff Centre has announced the screening of some of the world’s best mountain films when they come to Uganda’s capital city of Kampala for two showings on September 2 and 9.

The event is generously sponsored by Turkish Airlines and local tourism firms Nalubale Rafting, Sipi River Lodge located on the foothills of Mt. Elgon, and Wild Frontiers, one of Uganda’s leading safari and camp operators, who are all on board as partners.

Why Uganda may one ask – perhaps primarily because The Pearl of Africa is home to the legendary Mountains of the Moon which are locally known as Rwenzori Mountains. Snowcapped and often shrouded in mist and clouds are they considered one of the key ‘must climb’ locations for alpinists from around the world, notorious for very tough terrain, cold and wet weather and endless bogs to cross before reaching proper ‘climbing altitude’.

As mentioned already a second, standalone mountain, is found in the East of the country and is shared with neighbours Kenya, where on both sides a transboundary national park has been established.

Plenty of reason therefore to talk mountains and show mountain films and in the process get some global exposure that Uganda is not just home to two gorilla national parks, the Source of the River Nile and a total of 10 national parks overall but also offers some alpine adventures for those keen to tick off the Mountains of the Moon from their bucket list, or hike up the top of Mt. Elgon, an extinct volcano.

Entrance for adults will cost 20.000 Uganda Shillings, equivalent to about 8 US Dollars while students will have to pay 15.000 Uganda Shillings or the equivalent of 6 US Dollars.
