Record-breaking rainfall has triggered several deadly landslides and flooding in Hiroshima this morning.

According to NHK TV, 32 people have died and 9 people are still missing in the mud. It’s not clear if foreigners or tourists are among the victims.

At 10AMJST it was reported a firefighter died after being buried in a collapsed home during a rescue. This grave news how loose the sediment is here and how dangerous this on going story still is.

Another one of the dead was a two year old boy who was first pulled from the mud but then later died.

Images via NHK show a swath of damage at this location with numerous homes completely destroyed.

Rescue crews are currently on the scene in several locations across Hiroshima city digging out the mud. (Image top center shows some of the worst hit areas)

600 Japan Self Defense force personnel have been deployed to the area to assist in recovery efforts.

1,000 people have been evacuated in the city due to flood waters and the continued threat of landslides.
