NANTUCKET, MA – Nantucket, the idyllic island located about 30 miles south of Cape Cod, is North America’s most expensive destination in terms of its lodging cost. That’s the finding of a new survey from CheapHotels.org, which compared hotel rates for all destinations in the USA and Canada this summer.

The rankings were determined based on the price travelers will have to pay for the cheapest available double room from August 1โ€“31. Therefore, they represent the minimum price guests will have to spend to stay at each specific destination. Only those hotels and inns with a positive average client rating and only those located close to the beach/city center have been considered.

Visitors to Nantucket will have to spend, on average, $301 per night for the most affordable double room, making the small Massachusetts island clearly the continent’s most expensive summer destination. Coming in as the second most expensive locale is Portland, the largest city in the state of Maine. There, the average price for an accommodation is $276 per night. Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket’s neighboring island, rounds out the Top 3 at an average nightly rate of $274.

The most expensive destination in Canada is Jasper, Alberta. With an average price tag of $192 per night for the least expensive double room, this town in the Rocky Mountains ranks twelfth most expensive overall in North America.

The following table shows the 10 most expensive destinations in North America. The prices shown reflect the average rate for each destination’s cheapest available double room for the time period spanning August 1โ€“31, 2014.

Nantucket (Massachusetts) $301
Portland (Maine) $276
Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts) $274
Montauk (New York) $264
