WASHINGTON, DC – The US believes that Ukraine’s aircraft or air defense missiles could not knock Malaysian airliner Boeing 777, said US State Department spokesperson Marie Harf.

WASHINGTON, DC – The US believes that Ukraine’s aircraft or air defense missiles could not knock Malaysian airliner Boeing 777, said US State Department spokesperson Marie Harf.

“Russia said that the Ukrainian Su-25 could shoot down the MH17 with air-to-air missile. We believe that such an attack is not possible” – said Harf.

“Photos from the crash show damage consistent with the damage from surface-to-air missile. It does not fit, and is not consistent with the pattern of damage that we would see from the air-to-air missile, as the Russians state,” – said Harf.

In addition, she said, the Ukrainian system “Buk” could not shoot down the plane because they were far beyond their reach.

On Monday Chief of the Operational Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russian Federation Andrei Kartapolov said at a briefing that the Ukrainian Air Force Su-25 was at a distance of three to five kilometers from Malaysia Airlines liner. The US believes that the plane could have been shot down by pro-Russian terrorists, who thought that they were targeting the Ukrainian military transport aircraft. The militants claim that they do not have this type of weapons.
