TEMPE, Ariz. - Israeli tourism officials expect that US Airways Group Inc.'s plans to launch nonstop service from Philadelphia to Tel Aviv next summer will significantly add to the number of Americans visiting their country.

The Tempe, Ariz.-based airline announced Aug. 19 that the new daily, year-round service will begin in July 2009, subject to approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Israeli government.

The U.S. western region office for the Israel Ministry of Tourism said in a statement Tuesday that it expects the new route to be a boon for tourism in Israel. It said that last year more than 500,000 Americans visited Israel.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. offers daily nonstop service from Atlanta to Tel Aviv.
