After international flights by Ugandan-registered airlines were grounded following the panic suspension of Air Operators Certificates (AOCs) by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, Air Uganda has also come out with a statement by CEO Cornwell Muleya, further clarifying the reasons their flights had to be suspended.

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority has not issued any statements, as the beleaguered regulatory body continues to struggle to put the audit findings by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) right.

The June 19, 2014 letter from Cornwell Muleya, CEO of Air Uganda, states:

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) concluded a review of Uganda Civil Aviation systems, structures and operations on 17 June 2014. After this review, the airlines registered in Uganda received notification from the Civil Aviation Authority that all Air Operator Certificates (AOCs) for International Operations had been withdrawn and a new recertification process will be undertaken.

The AOC is the document that allows airlines to mount flights and without it, airlines cannot operate their air services. That is why we have been unable [to] operate flights since 17th of June when the notice was received. Air Uganda is working closely with the CAA to complete the processes required to resolve the matter in the shortest possible period. We will keep you advised of developments in this regard.

Options are available for customers with existing bookings made on or after Thursday, 17 June 2014 to arrange for alternate flights to their destination or to get a refund. Kindly contact Air Uganda on the telephone numbers below or your Travel Agent for assistance.
