Thailand update – May 22, 2014

Destination Asia, a Bangkok-based inbound operator updated eTN about today’s situation in Thailand.

ETN was unable to receive relevant updates from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), perhaps due to the communication block put in place by the Royal Thai military controlling the kingdom at this time.

Destination Asia’s message says: We would like to offer you our update as of Thursday 22nd May 2014, in regards to the current Bangkok situation since Martial law was imposed on Wednesday. Daily life continues without major disruptions across many parts of the capital. Currently there are no movement restrictions nor have night time curfews been imposed.

Yesterday “all political parties” were summoned to start a dialogue aimed at ending the protracted political crisis and to find common ground for resolutions. The talks ended without reaching a conclusion but a fresh round of talks is scheduled for today.

The martial law decree should only be a “temporary action to prevent violence”. The countryโ€™s priority now is to set a clear timetable for early elections and establish as soon as possible a fully functioning government with democratic legitimacy.

Bangkok continues to function as normal with most businesses and offices continuing to operate, as people are able to move around the city freely. The Shopping Malls within the city also remain open for business as normal. The public transport systems including the BTS Skytrain, the MRT Subway and the Airport Rail Link continue to operate as scheduled, as do the rail services and bus links from Bangkok to the provinces.

Due to the small military presence in Bangkok, we are advising all clients to monitor local news and social media for developments: allow extra time for journeys, including to Bangkok airports. Currently our day to day operations and ground services continue to operate as normal, and our daily sightseeing tours are continuing as scheduled.

All areas outside Bangkok and other tourist destinations within Thailand such as Phuket, Samui, Hua Hin, Pattaya and Chiang Mai remain fully operational and are not overly affected.

Our Crisis Management and senior executive teams are staying on full alert and are contactable on the following number: +66 81 864 2828 – or via email on [email protected] . Further information and updates will be advised accordingly.
