The Muljibhai Madhvani Foundation, formed by the Madhvani family in Uganda ahead of the country gaining independence in 1962 to honor the founder of their dynasty, has, over the decades, been a beacon of hope for thousands of Ugandan students, who while bright enough, could not have embarked on their studies and launched their careers without financial support towards tuition fees.
Yesterday, the foundation trustees launched the 2014/15 race towards scholarships, which last year benefited nearly 1,500 students of a wide cross section of fields, from engineering to law, agriculture to medicine, biology to information technology, and, of course, also for students in the hospitality, tourism, and environmental sectors, in which the business conglomerate is now heavily invested, with four lodges in Uganda and currently three lodges in Kenya. Both graduate and post-graduate students are eligible to apply as long as they meet the criteria outlined in the foundation’s guidelines.

650 million Uganda shillings are up for grabs, literally, and those chosen from what is again expected to be a very competitive race – last year tens of thousands applied for the 1,480 scholarships available – will have their tuition paid for to see them through their courses and allow them to graduate without the financial worries to find fees leading to reduced academic performance.

The legacy of Muljibhai’s spirit and vision lives on and is perhaps a reminder for Uganda’s nouvelle riche to equally show their commitment to the country where their businesses thrive, to do likewise and create a fund to support such noble ideals as education and research for the benefit of future generations.
