SARANDA, Albania – Tourist season kicked off on Saturday in southern Albanian city of Saranda with the traditional feast of mussel, the Albanian Telegraphic Agency reported.

Boasting a number of archaeological assets, the city will attract more visitors this year thanks to improved infrastructure, Saranda Mayor Stefan Cipa said. “The public beaches will be bigger in surface area spanning from Butrinti site to the harbor.”

Saranda attracted around half a million visitors last year and the authorities forecasted the visitors’ figure to increase by nearly 20 percent in 2014.

A city with a population of around 37,000 on an open sea gulf of the Ionian Sea in the central Mediterranean, Saranda is a key tourist attraction in Albania. The remains of the ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are near the city.
