KARACHI, Pakistan – Hamid Mir, a Pakistani journalist and television anchor, was shot and injured in Karachi, Pakistan. Police said he got three bullets including one to his stomach. According to Geo television, unknown armed men ambushed Hamid Mirโ€™s vehicle at Natha Khan bridge, and he received bullet injuries and was shifted to a private hospital. He is senior anchor and a seasoned journalist currently working with the largest media house of the country, Geo Television, and publication, Jang group.

His younger brother, Amir Mir, who is also a journalist, claims that Hamid Mir visited him and informed him of a plan by ISI chief Lt. General Zaheerul Islam to assassinate him. The ISPR stated that rising allegations against the ISI were โ€œmisleading.โ€ According to a press release published on the ISPR website hours after the attack on Hamid Mir, a spokesman said that an independent inquiry must immediately be carried out to ascertain the facts. However, rising allegations against the ISI, or head of ISI, without any basis is highly regrettable and misleading, the spokesman of ISPR said.

A website from Pakistan that is being considered as a tool of some intelligence networking has been instigating people to kill Hamid Mir for a long time. This website, in its column dated April 12, 2014, claimed that Hamid Mir is an advisor of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Geo News reporter Afzal Nadeem Dogar said Hamid Mir was traveling from Karachi airport to the Geo News office when he was attacked.

Geo reported that one person in Shalwar Kamiz was standing near a bridge from where Hamid Mir was going, and this man started firing on Hamid Mir. Amir Liaqat said that one bullet hit his pelvic area, one penetrated his stomach, and one struck leg. He said his pelvic area is damaged, but he is in stable condition.

This incident took place in the area of the Malir police station. His car was attacked when he was coming out of the airport and going to his office.

Leading anchor of Pakistan, Iftikhar Ahmed, when contacted to comment said that State has failed totally. He said Hamid Mir is a brave journalist who has a resolve and belief in democracy. Hamid Mir had been under threat for a long time, like many journalists, and the State of Pakistan has bowed down to them who want to silence all their voices of justice in the country.

This is the second attack on an anchor person in Pakistan within a month, as anchor person Raza Rumi was attacked in Lahore; he survived the attack although his driver was shot and killed in the attack.

Life threats were received by another anchor Imtiaz Alam recently. When contacted, Imtiaz Alam was of the view that attacks on journalists and anchor persons are actually a new design of some forces to silence the voice of democracy, and the journalist community must stand together before it is too late.

Agha Iqrar Haroon, Special Correspondent of Dispatch News Desk and a member of the National Press Club of Islamabad, was of the view that this situation was very complex in the country where irregular armies of extremists are walking around ready to kill anybody who talks and writes about them.
