KATHMANDU, Nepal – A 59-year-old American tourist was attacked and robbed while she was hiking in a jungle on the outskirts of Kathmandu.

Carolyn Dowty of California, her friend Linda Richter, 63, and a trekking guide, were on the Sundarijal-Chisapani-Helambu route via Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park when the incident occurred at Sundarijal VDC.

The robbers took $ 1,000 and NRs 20,000 in cash, passport, debit card, credit card, insurance card, driving licence, clothes, and food, among other items, from the tourist.

โ€œIt was around 3:30 pm when four young men appeared out of nowhere and grabbed me. Then before I knew they started thrashing me and took my bag. It happened so suddenly that when my friends came to my rescue, they were gone,โ€ she told this daily.โ€

She has filed a report with the Metropolitan Police Sector at Sundarijal, Tourist Police at Bhrikutimandap, and the American Embassy in Kathmandu. โ€œAll my money and clothes were in the bag. I donโ€™t have any cash now,โ€ she said. Dowty had earlier visited Nepal in 1979, 2011, and 2012.

โ€œI have always loved this country. I have been here many times but this was the first time I was robbed,โ€ she said, adding, the Nepali government should take such incidents seriously.

โ€œOtherwise, no European and American will come here.โ€ Dowty, however, says she wants to continue with her trek. She wants to visit Langtang and Manaslu among other destinations.

Tourist Police Unit, Bhrikutimandap has received over 600 complaints from tourists in the past eight months.
