LOS ANGELES, California – “In a world of shrinking natural resources, we believe that we must do what we can to help reducing our collective carbon footprint,” states Melik Kizilcan, General Manager at the Movenpick Hotel Izmir, in Turkey.

A top performing Green Globe member since 2011, Turkey’s Leading Business Hotel has demonstrated a firm commitment to continuously strengthen its involvement in sustainable initiatives, and engage in sustainable practices. All efforts recently earned re-certification.

Movenpick Hotel Izmir has introduced a program to trim energy and water costs, various green measures, such as LED lighting in public areas, water savers for shower heads and taps, the introduction of biodegradable pens, wooden key cards, and ecological bathroom amenities, are in place. Heating and cooling features of the hotel are controlled automatically, and all rooms have their individual energy savings system. Considerable efforts have been made to educate staff and reach out into the wider community, creating a property clearly dedicated to both, personal responsibility and informing, empowering and improving its surrounding environment.

“Sustainability is about future generations, therefore, we would like to make sure they grow up in a positive environment, and live a healthy, joyful life,” added Melik Kizilcan.

The hotel stands out with an amazing support of the community and charitable projects, geared towards the environment, health, and education. Funding has been provided for technical equipment and libraries at local schools, breakfast rooms at orphanages, and the Izmir Foundation for Children with Leukemia. Staff members dedicate many hours to volunteer activities, including clean-ups of the historical ‘Agora’, located in the heart of the city.

In cooperation with the Aegean Forest Foundation, the property added 1000 new young trees to the Movenpick Hotel Izmir Grove in the forest area of Cesme – Ildiri. Over the past three years, 3000 young trees had been donated to the project. Planting activities started out as part of the hotel’s sustainability program three years ago. It soon became a sincere mission, and this is the fourth consecutive year of planting young trees at the grove.

“We are very proud to count a total of 4000 young trees in the Izmir area, and we intend to pursue our tree planting project until we have our own Movenpick Hotel Izmir Forest,” commented Melik Kizilcan.
