(eTN) - Officers used a spike-strip to stop a freeway driver who turned out to be, San Diego police said, a confused French tourist.

A police spokesman said he didn't know why an officer tried to pull over the motorist. The pursuit started at 10:20 tonight on northbound Interstate 805 at Balboa Avenue. It ended four minutes later north of Sorrento Valley Road when all four tires on the driver's Ford were flattened by the spikes.

The driver was ordered out of his car at gunpoint while the California Highway Patrol blocked the freeway. Police were trying to find an officer who spoke French well enough to explain what was happening.
