The Director General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Koichiro Matsuura described the site of Madain Saleh, North Western, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia as “a crucial historical land mark.” Madain Saleh is first site from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia to be included on the world heritage list, July 2008.
“It also symbolizes the consciousness of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and reflects their attachment to collective ownership, as well as to the transmission of this heritage to future generations,” Matsuura said in a letter he sent to HRH Prince Sultan bin Salman, The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) Secretary General.
“I look forward to continued collaboration between UNESCO and the kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ensure that the conservation of their site contributes to sustainable development, reconciliation and social cohesion,” Matsuura concluded.
