Mumbai joined the world in celebrating Christmas on Wednesday. As midnight mass concluded at Holy Name Cathedral in Colaba on Tuesday, the congregation fed a slice of birthday cake to Oswald Cardinal Gracias, archbishop of Bombay. The head of the Catholic Church in the city celebrates his birthday on December 24 as if by a divine plan to prepare the path for the Lord’s advent.

Mumbai, previously known as Bombay, is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, and the fourth most populous city in the world, Maharashtra is a member of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners.

The skilled 65-piece choir raised its violins, cellos and clarinets to play ‘Happy Birthday’, prompting Cardinal Gracias to break into a shy smile.

Church spokesman Fr Neil dos Santos said, “This year, midnight mass was an exceptionally devotional experience. The congregation was larger than usual and I saw people in the crowd who had arrived from Cumballa Hill and Worli. An elderly couple took a taxi and came from Borivli an hour before mass was to start. There were 65-odd musicians instead of the usual 40. We unveiled a special crib resembling the altar of the Eucharistic Congress 50 years ago.”

The cardinal made a touching reference to that bitterly cold night of 2013 years before, when Joseph and Mary had struggled to find a place for the Son of God to be born. “Today too, as the world is enveloped by rampant disturbance and disbelief, we need to make space for God to enter our lives,” the cardinal said.

The humble fisherfolk of Musafirkhana, who are affiliated to the smallest parish in the city, are heeding his advice. St Ignatius, Mandvi, has barely 100-odd families, mostly Marathi-speaking Kolis others Goan Catholics. “Yet the fervour is strong. Youth groups have been visiting colonies like Cement Road to sing carols. Others sponsored new clothes. We are now having a party for children, most of whom are non-Catholics,” said parish priest Simon D’Britto.

The decoration and dishes prepared however has an Indian flavor in it rather than the European style. It is amazing to see non Christians equally celebrating Christmas with great enthusiasm.
